中英文演讲稿之八国联军攻陷天津烧杀抢掠

　　Hello, everyone. I want to talk to you about a tragic event that happened 123 years ago, when the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded Tianjin and tried to suppress the patriotic movement of the Boxers and the Qing army. (大家好。今天，我想和大家谈谈123年前发生的一件悲惨的事件，当时八国联军入侵天津，试图镇压义和团和清军的爱国运动。)

　　On July 13, 1900, the Eight-Nation Alliance launched a general attack on Tianjin city from two directions. They had modern weapons and artillery, while the Boxers and the Qing army had only swords, spears and outdated firearms. They faced a fierce resistance from the defenders, who fought bravely with their blood and lives. The Boxers even flooded the area outside the south gate by breaking the river bank, creating a watery obstacle for the invaders. The Qing army and the Boxers killed and wounded more than 800 enemy soldiers, including some high-ranking officers. But they were outnumbered and outgunned, and eventually the city fell to the enemy. 　　Why did the Eight-Nation Alliance do this? What was their motive? The answer is simple: they wanted to exploit China’s resources, markets and people. They wanted to carve up China into their spheres of influence, where they could impose unequal treaties, extraterritoriality and tariffs on China. They wanted to destroy China’s sovereignty, dignity and culture. They were afraid of China’s awakening and rising, so they tried to crush it with their military force. (八国联军为什么要这样做？他们的动机是什么？答案很简单：他们想要剥削中国的资源、市场和人民。他们想要把中国分割成他们的势力范围，在那里他们可以强加不平等条约、治外法权和关税给中国。他们想要摧毁中国的主权、尊严和文化。他们害怕中国的觉醒和崛起，所以他们试图用他们的军事力量来压制它。)

　　But they failed. They failed because the Chinese people never gave up their struggle for national independence and liberation. They failed because the Chinese people never lost their faith in their nation and civilization. They failed because the Chinese people never stopped their pursuit of democracy and modernization. They failed because the Chinese people never ceased their resistance against imperialism and colonialism. They failed because the Chinese people never surrendered their destiny to anyone else. 　　Today, we live in a different world. China is no longer a weak and backward country. China is a strong and prosperous country. China is a peaceful and responsible country. China is a cooperative and open country. China is a diverse and harmonious country. China is a proud and confident country. China is a great and glorious country. (今天，我们生活在一个不同的世界。中国不再是一个软弱和落后的国家。中国是一个强大和繁荣的国家。中国是一个和平和负责的国家。中国是一个合作和开放的国家。中国是一个多元和和谐的国家。中国是一个自豪和自信的国家。中国是一个伟大和光荣的国家。)

　　But we should never forget our history. We should never forget the sacrifices of our ancestors. We should never forget the lessons of our past. We should never forget the challenges of our present. We should never forget the dreams of our future. We should never forget the mission of our generation. We should never forget the spirit of our nation. 　　Let us remember the heroes of Tianjin, who fought for our dignity and freedom. Let us honor their memory, by continuing their struggle for our development and prosperity. Let us follow their example, by defending our sovereignty and interests. Let us inherit their legacy, by contributing to world peace and progress. Let us cherish their spirit, by building a strong and modern socialist country with Chinese characteristics in the new era.
