Test to check whether eight- and nine-year-olds know theirtimes tables will be trialed in some primary schools in England in March before being rolled out nationally.

The test, which ministers hope will improve pupils'numeracy, will become mandatory in 2020 for all year 4 students. numeracy n.

The government says the on-screen test, which assesses knowledge of the times tables up to 12, will last no longer than five minutes and has been designed to avoid causing additional stress for children and teachers.

  有人认为孩子们总算可以学点有用的东西了;

  也有人认为重要的是学习方法,而不是背诵口诀,这简直就是浪费时间;

。没。。答。。出。。来。。

David Cameron refused to answer a maths question - in case he got it wrong.

The Prime Minister backed plans for every child to be tested on their times table when they leave primary school. But heducked a question on what is nine times eight. duck v.

I do times tables only in the car with my children on the way to school…I'm going to stick to that just in case I get one wrong on your excellent television programme.

Q: Imagine you go to a pizza shop, and you order a pizza, and the waiter asks you if you'd like the large pizza that you've ordered cut into eight or twelve slices. What do you choose and why?

A:Eight. Because I wouldn't be able to eat twelve.

According to a report by the BBC, the U.K.'s poor numeracy skills cost the national economy an estimated 20 billion pounds per year, with an economic analysis putting that at equivalent to 1.3 percent of the nation's GDP.

In the spring of 2014, maths teachers in primary schools in the UK came to Shanghai to learn maths teaching and learning methods for the first time.

In February 2015, Nicky Morgan, the then British Minister of Education, set goals for students to master the multiplication table by the age of 12.

According to a report by Sheffield Hallam University, the Shanghai teaching and learning project was "the most creative one by UK Education Department".

British government said it will spend 41 million pounds in the next few years to improve the quality of math education in the country and the introduction of teaching methodology from Shanghai is part of it.

The education initiative will see the the extension of a "pioneering" maths teacher exchange programme.

The scheme arranges for British maths teachers to visit China and vice versa, allowing them to learn from each others' teaching methods.
