The letter was written by Mukuyiwumu, a 12-year-old girl from the Yi ethnic group living in Liangshan, one of the poorest areas in Southwest China's Sichuan province, the Beijing Youth Daily reports. In the 300-word long primary school essay, Mukuyiwumu writes about how she lost her mother just four years after her father's death, "Dad died four years ago, he loved so much…mom grew sick after a while." Mukuyiwumu's family was too poor to get her mother the necessary treatment. Her mother died just as

The undated photo shows Mukuyiwumu's 300-word composition that triggered an avalanche of support from netizens across the country.

A volunteer from a local charity organization, Huang Hongbin, had taken a picture of the composition during his visit to Mukuyiwumu's school on July 9. Huang was so moved by the letter and uploaded it on to his social media account on Weibo and Wechat. Afterwards, Huang paid a visit to Mukuyiwumu's home. He saw that Mukuyiwumu had to take care of two younger brothers as well as her grandparents. They lived in a dilapidated house with scarce food.

The composition attracted enormous public attention online, leaving countless readers in tears. Many donated funds and pledged support to help Mukuyiwumu and her family. Mukuyiwumu's brothers are now being taken care of by the local charity, as they live and go to school in a nearby Children's Village. Her family is also receiving a subsidy from the government. Meanwhile, Mukuyiwumu is continuing her studies and dreams of a better future.
