　　We use the conjunction Whereas to compare or contrast two facts. We can use Whereas either at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence.

　　Whereas用来比较或对比两个事实，意为“然而、但是”，可放句中，亦可放句首。

　　Part A, whereas + Part B.

　　Whereas + Part A, Part B.

　　Some countries only have one official language, whereas others have many.

　　有些国家只有一种官方语言，而有些国家则有多种官方语言。

　　Whereas some countries have many official languages, others only have one.

　　有些国家有多种官方语言，而有些国家则只有一种官方语言。

　　★I enjoy the mountains, whereas my wife prefers the ocean.

　　★ 我喜欢山，而我的妻子更喜欢海。

　　★Cars to them are a hassle whereas for us they were a luxury.

　　★ 汽车于他们而言是一种累赘，于我们而言却是一种奢侈。

　　★Whereas the population of working age increased by 1 million between 1981 and 1986, today it is barely growing.

　　★ 1981年到1986年适龄工作人口增长了100万，而如今适龄工作人口却几乎没有增长。

　　★Adolescents tend to be thought of as impulsive and dramatic, whereas adults are seen as more mature and aware of the consequences of their actions.
